Biography
Born in Qinhuangdao, northern China in 1999, Xiaolu had his first encounter with music at the age of 4, when he heard his kindergarten teacher play an electronic keyboard. His curiosity soon became a growing interest, as his supportive parents took him to his first piano lessons with Professor Yaqing Pan. He began his professional studies at the age of ten, when he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music middle school in Beijing to study with Professor Ye Lin. But born in a non-musical family, he had no intention to become a professional pianist at that time.
During his time in the Central Conservatory, Xiaolu broadened his scope and fell more deeply in love with music, especially symphonic music; his interest in music became passion. It was at the age of fifteen when he finally discovered his vocation as a musician after hearing the eighth symphony by Gustav Mahler. He won several first prizes in national competitions during this time. He moved to Germany and began studying with Professor Arie Vardi in Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media in 2017, to further his development as a mature musician and artist.
His talent was recognized as he won first prize at the ZF Music Prize in May 2022, showing “the deepest musical understanding, the highest precision and virtuosity, great inner creative power and an almost unbelievable colorfulness of sound” (ZF Kunststiftung). Only three months later, he was awarded the Bergé Second Prize at the prestigious 20th Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition. He was also a winner of the Verona International Piano Competition.
Today, Xiaolu has performed worldwide and actively emerged as one of the noticeable pianists of his age. As a soloist, he performed in important concert venues including Regentenbau Bad Kissingen, Graf-Zeppelin-Haus Friedrichshafen, Konzerthaus Ravensburg, Kleiner Goldener Saal Augsburg, Stadttheater Lindau, Konzil Konstanz, Salle Cortot, Théâtre Scéne Conventionnée de Laval, Teatro Filarmonico Verona, Wiener Saal Salzburg, Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, Beijing National Centre of Performing Arts, Beijing Concert Hall, Shanghai Grand Theatre among others. His orchestral collaborations include Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, ‘Mihail Jora‘ Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau, with conductors including Pablo González, Douglas Bostock, Hankyeol Yoon, Frank Braley, Valtteri Rauhalammi, Florian Groß and Ovidiu Balan.
Xiaolu is enthusiastic about all kinds of classical music, especially german and austrian composers such as Schumann and Schubert. He also loves jazz and jazz-related classical music. Xiaolu considers himself lucky being a musician, music is for him “not only a career path but it makes my life meaningful and fulfilled - it reveals an endless universe of human mind and I can’t help to go deep into it. When I’m making music, I am alive.”
